I love the marshmallow-white shoes that reveal Sue's frumpiness. I love the horrible image of the poisoned Niko curled up among broken bottles and weeds in the backyard. I love that they're eating fish sticks. And the image of the old man with the oxygen tank on the sidewalk when he'd expected to see the young couple he was jealous of. I love how this story contains the entire story of this couple's troubled past as well as the bright moments when they were young. I 'm always impressed by how you can totally inhabit a character's being and fill out the world their world with details that are so vivid and true.
