Video Footage of Anne Sexton Reading

Today is the 37th anniversary of Anne Sexton's death.

Anne Sexton's unapologetic poetry, her preoccupation with femininity and the macabre, her use of poetry as a channel for mental illness, made me want to write when I was a teenager. Discovering The Awful Rowing Toward God made me want to make beautiful things out of ugly feelings. Her book Transitions renewed my love of fairy tales. Her book of complete poems is one of the only entire collections by a poet I've read cover-to-cover.

Here's a video of Anne reading "Her Kind." The biography it mentions by Diane Middlebrook is a really interesting book and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about her life, her many affairs and relationships with other writers of the time, her sickness and how it fueled her poetry.

Like many, I can't help but be drawn to self-destructive artists, poets and musicians. But I so wish she had survived her illness and continued to share her voice with the world. Anne would have been 83 this year.

"Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard." -Anne Sexton

Found Footage Festival

Oh my stars! I just discovered Found Footage Festival's website and they have a million bazillion amazing podcasts up, all hilarious videos they've been collecting at thrift stores for years. It's the YouTube before YouTube. Homemade gymnastics videos, a how-to on infant massage, Christian rap videos, ladies who dress their cats up and make them play the piano, Pretty Boy Floyd the instructional pool shark, 80's manic jazzercise instructors ... and this terrifying infomercial.

So fascinating, all of it. Not only is it hilarious, but it highlights the general modern ridiculousness of human beings who want so badly to be on camera. It reminds me of my own ridiculousness. I love awkward unprofessional homemade things.

Found Footage Festival has all their videos online for free!
You can download them or watch them online. It will made you laugh. It will make your jaw drop.

Toodles.

Amazing

This video blew me away, and stands as a reminder that words aren't necessary to tell a compelling story.

It also stands as a reminder that our American Idol type shows here in the US are complete rubbish.
